The British Medical Journal is a general medical Journal, so articles about alopecia areata are scarce. However, an article which may be of interest is about Minoxidil over the counter:

This article is quite old now and is written by a consultant dermatologist for colleagues so the language can be complex in places. The author shows some cynicism to the effectiveness of Minoxidil.

PubMed Central (PNC) is the U.S. National Library of Medicine’s digital archive of life sciences journal literature. Access to PMC is free and unrestricted. Along with the British Medical Journal it provides a useful resource for researching published papers on specific aspects of alopecia such as treatment.

An article of particular interest published through PubMed is Topical Minoxidil. A preliminary review of its pharmacodynamic properties and therapeutic efficacy in alopecia areata and alopecia androgenetica.
