September is Alopecia Awareness Month - Get Talking!
Although alopecia awareness is something that Alopecia UK practices all year round, it is great to have a month dedicated to spreading the word about alopecia. Every September is Alopecia Awareness Month.
Get Talking Campaign
Alopecia UK’s motto for this year’s Alopecia Awareness Month is ‘Get Talking’.
Hair loss is an issue that many feel embarrassed to talk about. There is still a stigma attached to hair loss and this is something we want to tackle head on!
Those with alopecia can get a huge amount of support from talking to others about their experiences.Alopecia UK provides a number of opportunities to talk to others with alopecia. We have a network of 30 local support groups across the UK providing the chance to chat to others affected by hair loss and gain valuable peer support face-to-face. We also have online support forums, including our very popular closed Facebook group, allowing those with alopecia in the UK to share experiences with others in a more interactive way.
In addition, September is the month of our Big Weekend event. This year it will be held in Birmingham from Friday 22nd to Sunday 24th September. The event will include speakers, workshops, demonstrations and lots of opportunities to talk to others who have experienced hair loss.
Starting that first conversation about alopecia can feel daunting and we want to help give those who are affected the confidence to know that hair loss isn’t something they should feel embarrassed or uncomfortable about. We hope that the more alopecia is discussed, and the more awareness raised, the easier it will be for those diagnosed.
If the idea of talking to family and friends about your hair loss makes you feel anxious, consider talking to others with alopecia first. Peer support can make such a difference and can really help to boost self-esteem and confidence, perhaps allowing you to talk more widely about your alopecia at a later stage.
We appreciate that lots of people with alopecia prefer for their hair loss to be kept private and do not wish to talk to others about it. We all deal with alopecia in different ways and it’s about doing what works for you. The aim of our ‘Get Talking’ campaign is to try to remove the stigma and embarrassment that many feel towards hair loss and hopefully encourage those that would benefit from some peer support to reach out and start the conversation.
Watch our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts throughout September for our #GetTalking posts. If you're comfortable being public with your alopecia, please interact with us. Like, comment and share - your interactions with us on social media really can help us to spread the word.
In addition, we have created a 'Twibbon' which can be added to your Facebook and Twitter profile pictures. To add your Twibbon, click this link and click on the 'Add to Facebook' or 'Add to Twitter' buttons as appropriate.
