Topic: Alopecia versus Androgenetic Alopecia Posted: 19/October/2010 at 10:14pm |
What's worse ?? I think alopecia as you may have a return of your hair and never know where you are?
At least I know mine is gone forever - what do other people think?

I tend to agree. I'd hate to be still hoping for regrowth and persuing every treatment I could afford... also the added trouble of losing eyebrows and eyelashes doesn't appeal to me at all!

At least with AGA, we know where we stand, although it's draining at times and we have our good days and bad days! I know I won't loose my eyebrows and eyelashes and I'm grateful for that It would scare the hell out of me too!!

bUT SOMEHOW IT SEEMS MORE ACCEPATBLE TO HAVE ALOPECIA THAN FEMALE PATTERN BALDING - LIKE A MAN? SAYING IT TO OTHERS IS NOT SOMETHING I CHOOSE TO DO BUT IF I HAD ALOPECIA AREATA FOR EXAMPLE I MIGHT BE OPEN ABOUT IT AND NOT CARRY THIS SHAMEFUL HAIR LOSS AROUND IN SILENCE?

To be honest, I don't feel ashamed of it, I haven't done anything to be ashamed of and if people want to talk about it I'm happy to talk to them, I may just be able to make a few more people out there aware of aga and the problems that come along with it, and no, it's not just "cosmetic" or about vanity, it's about dignity and there's nothing wrong with that. It’s something that we didn't ask for but have to deal with.
I'm not sure that it's less or more acceptable out there then alopecia but know that you see more men then woman with male pattern baldness and that we always have, that’s probably because woman have just learned to cover or disguise it better then men but it's there and probably been around for as long as men’s male pattern baldness too!

Yes - this I realise is the other side of the coin. With alopecia areata you can say you have a medical condition, with AGA it's just egentics. It can make us look and feel like "less than female". That's the scorn and distasteful reactions I've dealt with, and honestly how I've sufferred myself - alopecia areata is a medical condition, pattern baldness belongs to men, and having it as a woman makes you wonder if you're really a woman at all...

as with men alopecia as in male pattern happens slowly over many years in some and can happen at any age,but if the hair loss happens quickly it is bad and a shock to many woman and even men,you would think in 2010 there would be some kind of cure for all types of hair loss but i think it is very complex, maybe it will be stem cell regrowth treatments that some companies are working on now, some people are having success with the dermoroller which can be used on the face and scalp with minoxidil but it is still not a cure,i can name many companies that are using the stem cell trials for hair loss but as yet it will be a few more years to know if they work.
Lots of snake oil rubbish treatments out on the internet so be careful before you part with any money.

That fact that it's referred to as "male pattern baldness" by doctors doesn't help! it should be re-named. as it does effect woman too, maybe not the same percentage but I think there are a lot more woman out there that have it then we realise, would it help us to talk to other's about it if it was called for example just "genetic hairloss" or simply aga, I think so. As a woman with aga it's hard, after all isn't a woman's hair "supposed" to be her glory!? That's the problem isn't it society think the same! We need to change our way of thinking! I, personally, am grateful that I have long thick eyelashes and nicely shaped eyebrows and lots more
