    Posted: 24/January/2012 at 7:45am

I’m back . . .

BOOM! After a year off, I’m back into the fold of fundraising. My nominated charity this year is Alopecia UK. I’ll be taking on a different sort of challenge this year, as opposed to the normal marathon. Firstly, I’ll be taking part in the Colombia Hellrider Duathlon event on 2nd June, and then on 8th July, I’ll be running in the British London 10K Run and for the finalé I’ll be taking part in the Tough Mudder hard-core 12 mile obstacle course on 17th November.

The cause

As some of you will know, I’ve been a long term sufferer of alopecia and have endured pretty much all stages of the disease since being diagnosed. It’s tough enough for an adult to come to terms with, so for a child it must a very challenging time in their lives. So, my main focus is to raise funds to help set up much needed children’s support groups throughout the UK.

The events

Colombia Hellrider Duathlon – Saturday 2nd June 2012

The Columbia Hellrider Duathlon takes place in the grounds of West Wycombe Park, Buckinghamshire. However, this is no ordinary Duathlon. It is an eight hour endurance race, in which teams of three, five or the mad individual will complete a 5K run followed by an 8K mountain bike route continuously between the hours of 10am and 6pm.

The aim is to complete as many loops of the course as you can within the allotted time frame. The 5K run route is by no means ‘a walk in the park’. It is an all terrain route, including steep climbs, fields, forest tracks and also two river crossings. The 8K mountain bike route also consists of some steep climbs and tricky terrain throughout.

British London 10K Run – Sunday 8th July 2012

The British 10K London Run, in its 12th Anniversary year and taking place right in the middle of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee year and just days before the 2012 Olympics, is the UK's most prestigious and sought-after 10km road race.

The race starts at 9.35am with the exciting and historical route taking you through the very heart of London, running past many of central London's world famous historic landmarks including Big Ben / British Houses of Parliament, The London Eye, St Paul's Cathedral, Trafalgar Square / Nelson's Column and Westminster Abbey.

Tough Mudder – Saturday 17th November 2012

Set in the Picturesque Cholmondeley Estates of Malpas, Cheshire, the Tough Mudder event is a hardcore 12 mile obstacle course designed by the Special Forces to test your all around strength, stamina, mental grit, and camaraderie. The Tough Mudder course will have 12 miles of hills, mud, water, ropes, walls, electric shocks, and of course, fire – Oh my god, what have I signed up for!?

The plea

I know that this is a challenging time for all of us, so I won’t keep hounding you for your money, but if you feel that you can assist me in any way with raising money for a very worthy cause, I’d be most grateful if you could find the time to click on the ‘Donate’ button on my justgiving page: http://www.justgiving.com/Raver2012

Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you

Training is now well underway for each of the above events. Here's a little look at some of the training programme, although it's not me starring . . . yet.

Core fitness carried out last night, 6m run at lunch today, followed by more core fitness toinght - pretty much the routine for the rest of the week.

Weekend plans are for an 8m run, followed by 12m mountian bike route, then more core training (weights, etc).

Note to self: Repair puncture from the last mountain bike ride!

Suffered a set-back with the flu and a chest infection descending upon me. Frustrating, very frustrating. Hopefully I will be able to continue on with the training early next week when the antibiotic course is complete.

Still managing to get out for a couple of miles walk in my lunch hour, so all is not lost. On a positive note, the puncture is now repaired!

Training resumed! A good 6 mile snow run yesterday, slippery in places, but still managed it in 42 mins. Resting the legs today, but will do some core work tonight.

No core training last night, just clearing up the sick from my youngest's bed Dead
Hopefully I get some core in tonight . . .

Another good 6m run this lunch time - still a bit slippery under foot in these parts, but good to be out nevertheless!

45 mins out on the feet again today. 1m out, 1m back along with 4 x 800 meters fast through the fields which are still covered in snow - great bit of endurance work.

Another 6 miles in the bank today and further core training to follow tonight.
Really nice afternoon out there today, back in shorts again and judging by the weather forecast I could be back in a running vest by Thursday! Bring on the Spring!

Interval training planned in for today:

1 mile out, followed by x5 800 meters on the fields (under 3mins per set with 30 sec rest inbetween) then 1 mile back.

Sounds easy - Interval training is a great way for those wanting to improve their times and also their endurance. Give it a try, it works. By using this training method I managed to knock an amazing 20 mins off my last marathon time! And the best part it burns calories like there's no tomorrow.

WoW Dave way to go.  I'm back from a nearly three week holiday, mostly eating and drinking on the other side of the world - must get my behind into gear!

Thanks Jackie, sounds like you had a great holiday!

Yes, time to get back into training mode now, but with your dedication it'll be a breeze.
