 Topic: My next new treatment

Its a yr since I lost all my hair now Iam AU, and I have finally decided to start DPCN treatment 1st appointment on 29th feb........ thought Id give it a go as Ive more or less tried all the treatments on offer, the only one left for me after dpcn is the puva treatment. Ive tried all the other lotions and potions the steroids etc and nothing worked for me but thats ok. I feel Ive come a long long way in 1 year and continue to more or less live my life like I use to before. Got to say my experience has made me a better person and I am in a happy place with my life & work ofcourse Id love my lovely long locks back , actually even if it was short but thats ok for now, i've figured the best thing for me is to try and go with the flow with Alopecia. Anyway just thought id mention it. Im curious & a little nervous of how the DCPN will go for me...... Gotta give it a shot though hey :)

HI Sorry ive not posted for a while been busy with work etc. As for the DPCN treatment, well I went ahead did the patch test and boy oh boy did I not feel well with it ended up with a really really sore patch with blisters, lymph nodes the size of golf balls at the back of my neck even onto my scalp, headaches that last 2 wks and general feeling unwell especially for about the first week just lay in bed for a day and cried felt so unwell. (doctor and nurse did say they had not had anyone with such a strong/ bad reaction before) It took the best part of a month for everything to get back to normal. I went sat down with doc & nurse at hospital had a really good chat with a good cry too ......... I really do want to give this treatment a go, as I know my personality and will always ponder the what if???? Anyway the good news is Ive had my 2nd patch test last week with the weakest strength given ( we will continue to do patch tests -instead of covering my entire head with the solution incase of a bad reaction like the first) and have not had a reaction at all so Im guessing that this week they will up the strength of the solution.
So thats my news for now....... a journey and ahalf this alopecia is thats for sure.
p.s ive forgotten my password had to get auk to send me one ........ which I will never remember any chance that you can change the one they give you to one you will remember???

ALLERGIC CONTACT SENSITISATION: DPCPDPCP stands for diphenylcyclopropenone. It is a chemical agent used to treat severe alopecia areata. It is said to be safe although there is no information about the long term side effects when used over many years. DPCP comes as a fluid and is applied to the bald areas once a week. Sensitising is achieved with the application of a 2% solution and is applied to a 4x4cm area on the scalp. One week later the area is examined. If there is a severe response with blisters , intense redness , scaling and itching, treatment is postponed till the following week. If there is only mild redness , scaling and itching, a lower concentrate of DPCP can be applied on the hairloss areas. After every administration of DPCP, the painted area should not be washed for 48 hours and kept covered because sunlight inhibits the action of DPCP.
Side Effects
Eczema, Lymph node enlargement and skin discoloration are all possible side effects.
Cost
Available from and applied by a dermatologist or nurse.
Effectiveness
First evidence of hair growth is expected to occur after 3 months, full growth after 6 months. Once full regrowth occurs, the frequency of application is decreased. Even after full growth of hair, some patients may stop responding to furthur application of DPCP and may lose all their hair again. If after 5 months of using DPCP no hair regrowth is noticed DPCP is discontinued.

Hi Teri, thanks for the update and thanks to the admin person for giving a description of DPCP.
Best of luck with the treatment. You have been through a lot with it but it should give you some peace of mind knowing you have tried everything.

Good Luck Teri, my experience is on the forum too. I saw people at my hospital clinic where it was working well. One tip : once you have got a dosage level established make sure they have ordered enough of that strength lotion for you.
