The timer is counting down every second now and there’s only 4 months and 14 days to go until we run the final Flora London Marathon. We decided that we should give you a taster of what goes into the preparation and training for an event like this.

As part of this blog we’ll give you information on the miles we run, when we run, the route, the weather and basically our thoughts and feelings.

And remember, if you wish to sponsor us at any time, you can do so by visiting our justgiving page here: http://www.justgiving.com/eastauk (well I had to get it in somewhere didn’t I).

Dave Utley

I’ll start this blog off by giving you a brief insight into what I’ve already done to date.

I started my training on the 28th October by completing my first run in over a year, how hard was that! A lot harder than I thought actually! And since I have a very busy home life, all my midweek runs have to be done in my lunch hour whilst at work, and longer weekend runs need to be done early in the morning – too early for a weekend!!

Anyway, I decided to start off with a 5 mile distance for my first run, probably at bit too much as I discovered the next day, waking up like rigor mortis had set in was not a good feeling! Not to be deterred from this, I creaked out of bed and got myself moving again.

First Run Stats

Date: 28-Oct-08

Route: Perimeter of Cambridge Airport

Distance: 5 miles

Time: 13:00

Duration: 40 minutes

Weather: Sunny/cloudy – 9 degrees

Thoughts: Felt ok at first …… On the whole it was a good first run, but suffered later.

November and into December has seen me run 5 miles every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, followed by longer runs over the weekend. I won’t document them all at this point, but will do so in future posts. Below are three sets of stats from my longer runs.

Date: 16-Nov-08

Route: Barrow 10

Distance: 10 miles

Time: 07:02

Duration: 1 hour 27 minutes

Weather: Cloudy – 2 degrees

Thoughts: A good first long run.

Date: 23-Nov-08

Route: Barrow-Risby 13

Distance: 13 miles

Time: 07:15

Duration: 1 hour 59 minutes

Weather: Heavy snow – 0 degrees

Thoughts: A very hard run given the conditions. Face was stinging as the snow whipped across it - Very cold Brrrrrrrr!!!!!

Date: 6-Dec-08

Route: Barrow 10

Distance: 10 miles

Time: 06:30

Duration: 1 hour 22 minutes

Weather: Cloudy – 0 degrees

Thoughts: Great run and felt much more comfortable with the distance and managed a personal best (PB) shaving a whole 5 mins off the last time I did it. Must be getting fitter!! On the downside, it’s no fun running country lanes in pitch black, but hey, I’ve got no choice!

So, now is the time where we start to get serious. The mileage of the longer runs will start to increase every couple of weeks and my midweek runs will become more testing – Mondays will be known as ‘Speed Work Day’, Wednesdays as ‘Fast and Steady Day’ and Fridays as ‘Marathon Pace Day’. Now I’ve got my fitness levels back up, I am also considering introducing another 5 mile run on Tuesday’s to boost my mileage.

I’m off for a run at lunch time today, so will let you know how I get on.

Bye for now!

Dave Utley

Debs/Sharan, thanks for your comments, much appreciated!

Since I started running, back in October, I’ve undoubtedly improved. However, it hasn’t all been plain sailing. To start off my training I bought a new pair of cheap running shoes, let’s face it even cheap pairs aren’t that cheap. Anyway as the first weeks of my training went by, my old friend shin splints paid me a visit, shortly followed by his pal Achilles heel! This hadn’t happened to me in a long while and was becoming increasingly frustrating.

A trusted friend of mine told me that I should get a gait analysis check done as this would tell me why I was having trouble. A gait analysis is where your legs are filmed by video camera whist running on a tread mill. From this, many running/stride traits can be discovered. As it turns out I ‘Overpronate’, meaning that my heel collapses too soon when it hits the ground, resulting in my legs not getting as much support as they should do, further resulting in the onset of shin splints, Achilles heel, etc.  With modern techniques this can be corrected by either custom made insoles or running shoes made to give support where required. So after spending a lunch hour on the treadmill, I ended coming out the shop lighter ….. quite a few £’s lighter!!! I ended up having to purchase yet another pair of trainers! The morale of the story is …. Cheap running shoes cost more in the end!

Since donning my purpose built costly running shoes, my ailments have improved dramatically, as have my running times. Today’s run was cold and damp and rainy, but I managed to get around in a fairly respectable time. Half marathon day tomorrow and the forecast is bad, what a surprise!!!

Run stats

Date: 12-Dec-08

Route: Perimeter of Cambridge Airport

Distance: 5 miles

Time: 13:00

Duration: 35.13 minutes

Weather: Cloudy/Raining – 5 degrees

Thoughts: Ran at a comfortable pace, didn’t push it and came close to a PB (34.59).

Have a good weekend all!

Wow Dave that's amazing!  Good on you for getting out there and running in the absolute crap that the British call weather.  And congratulations for keeping it up this long and all the improvement, I guess having a goal to work towards really helps.

Keep up the great work, and don't wear out those special shoes too quickly!  (or just buy a new pair a week or two before the race)

Your= possessive
Example: your book, your opinion
You're= contraction of 'you are'
Example: You're a lovely person
These two are not now, nor have they ever been, interchangeable.

Hi

I always use to have to buy the expensive running shoes as well.  Same problem as you Dave. I'd love to be involved in this.  I don't know if I could do a whole marathon.  I've only ever done a half.  It was fun and felt like such a good achievement at the end of it.  Sounds like you are doing exceptionally well.  Go you.

Thanks for keep us updated.

Yay go for it!!!!

Good luck :)

One advantage of being bald is that you can't see the grey hairs as you get older.
So no need to worry about them!
