Join the Apatchy Warriors to take on the Total Warrior challenge for International Alopecia Day 2017!
Location: Shap (Lake District, Cumbria)
For the second year in a row we’ll be facilitating a team of Apatchy Warriors to take on the gruelling Total Warrior 10k obstacle course. It’s muddy, it’s tough, but it’s a lot of fun! As it falls on 'International Alopecia Day' each year we thought it was the perfect way to mark the day and use the opportunity to raise a bit of alopecia awareness while bringing out our inner warrior!
"I still can't believe I actually did it! I found strength I never knew I had in me and support from teammates that went beyond anything I had ever experienced before. Amazing experience with some truly inspirational people who I am now proud to call my friends." (Susan)
If you fancy challenging yourself and taking on the 10k obstacle course then why not join us?! It’s only a bit of mud, fire, ice, heights and erm...ahem... maybe a couple of little electric shocks too (they're fine honestly!) You can even do it pretty much for free if you do a bit of fundraising for Alopecia UK (please see below).
We had a team of twenty last year and we very much worked as a team to get round the course. You can see our photos from last year here (hopefully these images will inspire you to join us!). All are welcome to be a part of the team. We encourage as many people with alopecia as possible to be a part of the team but also welcome friends, family, partners and wider Alopecia UK supporters too. Last year we had nine people with various types of alopecia, two parents of a child with alopecia, and the rest were partners and friends. Being part of a team also makes the entry price a bit cheaper. Please note that Total Warrior’s entry price increases incrementally throughout the year so if you are going to take part you are best signing up as soon as possible! (And then you can get training as soon as possible too!).
"I found the whole Warrior experience totally overwhelming. We shared mud, sweat, pride, toothpaste, tears, tents, tales, baldness and a few beers. An experience and friendships I will never forget! Thank you AUK for making one of those mad ideas a reality." (Tamsin)
Our aim of this event is to raise awareness and just have a bit of fun whilst marking International Alopecia Day, but we also encourage fundraising too. Fundraising is optional but we do give an incentive. Anyone who individually raises £150 for Alopecia UK through sponsorship for this particular event are eligible to claim £50 of their Total Warrior entry fee back from Alopecia UK. Notes:
This can only be claimed back after you have completed the event and once your sponsor money is in to Alopecia UK.
This is a reimbursement from Alopecia UK and entirely separate from Total Warrior, i.e. it is not a refund from Total Warrior.
Last year our team of twelve fantastic fundraisers raised an impressive £3328.25! Can we top that in 2017?! If you would like to fundraise please set up your own individual page on JustGiving and select to raise money for Alopecia UK. After doing so you can request to join our team here. (Note that if you will be claiming your entry fee back you will need to state this when setting up your individual page - JustGiving will ask you).
"An experience! Loved the fact we supported each other in a team environment. Tough but worthwhile." (Carlo)
Last year we also camped at a nearby campsite and as such made a bit of a weekend of it...
As soon as I crossed the finish line, I wanted to do it all over again! SO much fun! Yes, hard work, but the team camaraderie was amazing! Camping together around the fire afterwards was really lovely too! Can't wait to do it again this year! (Amy)
Join the Apatchy Warriors Team!
Visit www.totalwarrior.co.uk and register. When doing so ensure you Enter 'The Lake District 10k' on Saturday 5th August 2017
Select the Option ‘Join a Team’
Search ‘Apatchy Warriors (for Alopecia UK)’
Use password: auk2017
Select ‘Team Entry (16-24 members)’. Price at time of writing is £53.10 plus £3.50 fees until 16th February (price will go up after this date). We’ll select 16-24 members just in case as currently it’s the same price as 25+ members but we hope to go over 25 team members this year.
Then register yourself.
After you have registered we will contact you for your t-shirt size so that we can give you an ‘Apatchy Warriors’ t-shirt to wear to complete the course. We’ll also invite you to join a Facebook Group.
Some extra notes:
If any of you know of any companies that might like to sponsor the Apatchy Warriors team then please get in touch with Alopecia UK (firstname.lastname@example.org). Sponsorship helps us to cover the costs of t-shirts for the whole team, and help towards camping and travel costs for those with alopecia. If you know a company that could be a 'Total Hero' or 'Apatchy Pal' to our team of warriors this year, please ask them to check out our Sponsorship Opportunities here and tell them to get in touch with us.
Scroll down on this Total Warrior page (click here) for further info about 'Getting There'. Everyone must make their own way to the event. Most participants came in cars last year but a few did get the train and we arranged pick ups at Penrith Train Station (for those arriving in plenty of time. We’ll organise this kind of thing in the Facebook Group as it helps if people can arrive at the same time). Last year some of us camped Friday and Saturday night, others just the Saturday night, some didn’t camp at all.
Total Warrior lists various accommodation options. We will be camping at Green House farm campsite which is situated in the centre of Shap. Onsite facilities include enclosed toilet with basin, showers and fresh water access (we stayed there last year and the showers and toilets were all good!). It is £12 per person per night. Alopecia UK can make the booking and then each person can just pay at the time (see below if you have alopecia). Everyone must bring their own tent, sleeping bag, pillow, roll mat etc but again, between us all we did provide certain things last year for those that didn’t have anything or would struggle to bring it on the train (we’ll organise all of this in the Facebook group).
If you are planning on staying at a hotel or B&B then we would recommend booking as early as possible as they tend to book up months in advance.
We would like all team members to arrive at Total Warrior one hour before our wave time so that we can take team photographs etc. We’ve requested to be on the 12pm wave but this will not be confirmed by Total Warrior until a few weeks beforehand. Us requesting 12pm does not necessarily mean we will get that time so please bear this in mind when making travel plans, it could be earlier or later.
As mentioned we’ll set up a Facebook group as it helps for people to make arrangements and meet each other before the day.
Upon completing the course you will receive your free
beer from Total Warrior! They then have an after party which lasts
until about 8pm which we plan to attend before heading back to the
campsite (and possibly a nearby pub).
By registering with the Apatchy Warriors team you agree to wear a t-shirt provided to you by Alopecia UK to complete the course in, take part in Alopecia UK photos and arrive one hour before the team’s allocated wave start time (see Timings note).
Extra note only for those with alopecia
As this is primarily an
alopecia awareness event, and an experience we would like to encourage
as many with alopecia to take part in as possible, we can give some
financial help towards those with alopecia in the form of some help
towards travel costs (negotiated individually please speak to Jen) and camping expenses (maximum £24 if staying two nights). We use Corporate Sponsorship money
(i.e. that donated by companies to Sponsor our Team) to pay for this.
Any problems or questions please contact Jen Chambers, Alopecia UK Events and Support Manager, on email@example.com or call 07763293687.
