It’s that time of year again when we step up our campaign to raise awareness of alopecia.
We recognise that not everyone is in a position where they feel able to talk about their hair loss but we hope that those who may be struggling can gain strength from seeing others raising awareness of the condition.
At Alopecia UK we believe that not only does greater awareness lead to greater understanding from the general public and medical professionals, but also helps us to have our voices heard!
We are hosting Alopecia UK’s ‘Big Weekend’ in London on 13/14 September. Tickets for the information day on Saturday 13th have now sold out. However, you are still able to join us for the awareness walk on the Sunday 14th if you wish. Details here.
Here are a few of the activities our members are doing this month:
Laura Griffiths is going ‘au natural’ and ditching her wig and scarves from 1 September to 5 September. Laura explains: “After going to the Alopecia UK 10th Anniversary event at Alton Towers in April and meeting so many other people with the same condition, I finally felt confident to completely shave my head. I choose to wear either a headscarf or wig most of the time. Both are ok but nothing feels as good as going ‘au natural’. In support of Alopecia Awareness Month this September, my tasks is to shed the headwear from 1st September to the 5th September. And who knows, if all goes well, maybe the whole of September!” You can support Laura by making a donation and leaving her a message of support on her Justgiving page.
It is the Bupa Great North Run (GNR) on Sunday 7 September and we are extremely lucky to have 6 individuals taking part raising funds for us. Two of our volunteers who helped with our Alton Towers event, Tom Spencer and Neal Pearsall, are amongst the runners. Helen Carter, who also came along to the Alton Towers event, is one of our star GNR fundraisers. Check out her story here. This year’s GNR will see the 1 millionth participant cross the finish line. Here’s hoping it’s one of Alopecia UK’s star athletes!
Wendy Frier is hosting a fundraising event in Blyth, Northumberland, on Saturday 6th September. It will include head shaving, arm/leg waxing, raffles, tombolas and more. Full details can be found here.
Sandra Waring and Wendy Hoskins are both doing their first ever 10k events for Alopecia UK by taking part in the Cardiff 10k on Sunday 7 September.
Fae Nelson is hosting a coffee evening/head shave auction for Macmillan Cancer Support and Alopecia UK on Monday 29 September in Bedlington, Northumberland. You can read full details of why Fae has organised the evening here.
Thanks to everyone who is ‘getting involved’ this Alopecia Awareness Month. If you have an awareness or fundraising story to share, please send details to email@example.com or get in touch with Alopecia UK on Facebook or Twitter.
