Manchester was the venue for Alopecia UK’s 2nd ‘Big Weekend’ event, with just short of 200 people joining together for our Information Day on Saturday 12th September.
This year we were lucky enough to have sponsors and exhibitors present, adding a wealth of expertise and advice to attendees.
As well as taking in demonstrations from our sponsors, Karen Betts and Eylure, and checking out our exhibitors’ stands, attendees were able to listen to speakers and take part in workshops & focus groups.
Speakers included Dr David Fenton focusing on alopecia areata, Dr Matt Harries focusing on androgenetic and scarring alopecias, as well as talks about ‘Cosmetics for Concealing Hair Loss’, ‘ Hypnosis, stress and its relationship with the skin’ and ‘The Rollercoaster of Alopecia: Exploring Individual Experiences and Group Psychotherapy’
There were workshops about coping with alopecia and building emotional resilience as well as focus groups about alternative & complementary therapies and wigs.
The feedback from the Information Day has been great, the following being just a few quotes from some of those who came along:
"Great day yesterday, finally realise I am not the only one with alopecia, thank you everyone!”
"I had a wonderful day yesterday, I met so many fantastic people. It was so refreshing to talk to people who just know exactly how you are feeling and was great to laugh about the trials and tribulations of the wig!! The day was organised brilliantly, thank you so much, I was so happy to be there”
"Thank you soooo much for a fabulous day/night. This is a big turning point for me after 30 years of coping with Alopecia. To walk in and be able to chat openly with people "who know and who get it" is so amazing for me. I have felt so alone for so many years: thank you to the amazing people I've met today. And thank you to Jen , Amy and the girls for helping me to move forward. You don't realise the difference you've made. A fab day!!”
As well as the Information Day on the Saturday, the weekend also included social activities on the Friday and Saturday night and a trip to the Coronation Street tour on the Sunday, providing a fantastic awareness opportunity.
A BIG thank you to everyone who came along and made the event such a success. And special thanks to our Sponsors and Exhibitors (full details below).
