Glasgow Big Weekend is a BIG success!

22nd September 2016

Alopecia UK held its 3rd annual ‘Big Weekend’ in Glasgow on 2nd - 4th September. Approximately 200 people gathered for the conference part of the event on the Saturday, listening to speakers, participating in workshops, getting information about products and services from exhibitors and sharing experiences with others with alopecia.

It was exciting for Alopecia UK to bring the event to Scotland for the first time and lovely to have a good mix of Scottish attendees and others from around the UK enjoying a weekend break.

We have lots of thank yous which we’d like to make…..

Firstly thank you to our Silver Sponsors, Eylure and Trendco Wigs, and Bronze Sponsors, Kool Kaps and Hair Solved, without whom the Big Weekend event would not exist.

Thank you to our exhibitors who supported the event and showcased lots of fantastic products and services – Comfi Hair, Glamorous Butterfly, Hipheadwear, Merchant Wigs & Hair, Mrs Makeup, Parruche Wig & Hair Boutique, Saks Medical & Cosmetic Ltd, The Institute of Trichologists, Untangled Hair – Freedom Hair by Amiee and Zella Rose Wigs.

Thank you to all our speakers – Michelle Moffatt, Dr Abby Macbeth, Dr Matt Harries, Professor Des Tobin, Dr Susan Holmes, Dr Jane Boissiere, Dr Gillian Smith, Anita Raman, Amrit Bhatti, Tracey Walker, Jason Saks, Barbara Cameron (Mrs Makeup) and Simon Beale.

Thank you to Changing Faces, Trendco Wigs and Anne Connolly for facilitating workshops.

Thank you to Kim Slack and Michelle Moffatt for doing make up demonstrations.  Thank you to Eylure for doing false eyelash demonstrations.  Thank you to Sacha Davies for doing stick on eyebrow demonstrations.

A huge thank you to all our volunteers who travelled in from all over the UK to help with the event, welcoming people, manning the AUK stall and providing valuable extra pairs of hands.

Thank you to all the attendees for travelling from near and far to be in Glasgow for our Big Weekend.  The event does not work without those affected by alopecia making the effort to travel in.  We had attendees from all corners of the UK this year as well as the Republic of Ireland and Sweden. We know there are costs involved in coming to a weekend like this but as one of our volunteers (Michelle Grayson) said, “I feel like I’ve had a mini holiday!”

Thank you to the sponsors and exhibitors who provided raffle prizes and also to Lorna Weir, Hannah Pagdin, Alison Chambers and Buff Headwear for their contributions too.

Thank you to the British Association of Dermatologists for providing funds for designing and printing this year’s event brochure.

Thank you to Alopecia Help and Advice Scotland and Scottish Alopecia Support Group for helping to promote the event in Scotland. It was lovely to meet you, along with Hugh, the new Chair of Autoimmune Alopecia Research UK.  It was fab to get representatives from other organisations together and get to know each other better.

Thank you to Jessica Fulcher of Slattery Patisserie for making a fabulous Alopecia Awareness Month cake.

Thank you to our Young Person's Ambassador Joelle for helping out at the event and writing this fantastic article about the Big Weekend for Metro newspaper.

Thank you to G04 productions for coming along to do photography on the Sunday and also creating a great keepsake video of our day there. You can watch the video below.

Thank you to the Sun for shining for our Sunday at Loch Lomond. It helped to make day extra special!

Thank you, goodbye and good luck to Wendy Cliffin.  Wendy has been on placement with Alopecia UK two days a week for the last eighteen months and has helped with both the Manchester and Glasgow Big Weekends, as well as our 2016 Alton Towers event.  We will miss her but wish her well with the rest of her Events Management course at university.

And finally, thank you to Glasgow for being such a good host city!

Phew! There is a lot of people involved in events!!
