When the volunteer who set up Alopecia UK's Portsmouth support group stepped down, 10 year old Ben Price was determined to do something to help.
Ben had attended the group with his dad Stewart and had found meeting others with alopecia gave him a lot of support.
Ben and Stewart decided that they would take over the running of the group and Ben also thought it would be a good idea to do some fundraising to cover the room hire costs of the meetings for 2015. This totalled £60 and so a fundraising page was set up for a sponsored cycle with a target of £60.
Ben's challenge was to cycle from his home in Horndean to the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth and back, a grand total of 22 miles.
We think it's fair to say that Ben exceeded his fundraising target by quite some way........raising a HUGE £1,108. This included a very generous donation of £300 from Premiership footballer Jonjo Shelvey (who has alopecia himself).
Jonjo also sent Ben a message of support and encouragement on his Justgiving page: "Good luck fella. Well done for doing it. I wish you all the best"
Ben was also featured in a local newspaper article, raising awareness of alopecia and the local support group at the same time.
Well done to Ben for his efforts. They are very much appreciated!
