Tina Palmer and her partner Rich Manning recently held a boxing night in aid of Alopecia UK in Knowle, Bristol. We spoke with Tina to find out more....
How did the idea of a boxing night in aid of Alopecia UK come about?
Rich has always been interested in boxing so he decided to write a post on his Facebook page asking if anyone would train him to fight. He wanted to have one fight to raise money for Alopecia UK as I have had the condition for 15 months. We were shocked to find there are few answers to why it occurs and we wanted to raise awareness of alopecia and support the charity.
Did Rich put in a lot of training?
After 7 weeks of training Rich broke his nose but this didn't put him off! In fact, it made him more determined! Rich was working 12 hour days and training every night.
Tell us a bit about the fight night itself...
The fight night was held on Saturday 18th July. Rich won his fight! Also on the bill that night were fellow boxers from the gym: Richard Alpine, Ben Thomas, Tom Biggs, Daniel Longman and Ryan Blair. The atmosphere on the night was amazing. We went around the crowd with buckets wearing our Alopecia UK t-shirts. We had a wonderful night.
How much did you raise in total?
We raised £300 in collections on the night and Rich raised £950 from the ticket sales. Friends and family have also been very generous in donating on our Justgiving page, bringing the total to £2,228.77! And we still have some items to auction off. We have got a gym membership and supplements, a hot air balloon ride, a free reflexology session and free eyebrow tattooing.
Is there anyone you wish to thank?
We would like to thank everyone who supported us. We couldn't have done it without them. Rich and I have made some fantastic friends during the organisation of this event. They have all become like a massive family to us as Chris Winters' gym.
Special thanks to:
Chris Winters a.k.a Skemer for coaching Rich at his gym in Knowle, West Bristol for 8 months free of charge.
Duane Winters (professional boxer a.k.a The Gasman) for giving Rich a one to one training session and giving out the trophies on the night.
Stefan Dornin for being Rich's opponent and driving all the way from Birmingham.
Matty Hudd and Julie Hardiman of Trojan Gym, for allowing Rich to use the gym for free. And for Julie's work with the Evening Post article and being a massive support to me personally and for her donation.
Darrel Pursey at Pursey Gym for being a great support and donating £146.00 from the subs for Thursday night's session and donating £100 from his own pocket!
Tommy Jenkins for all his wise words, support and coaching.
Stuart Jenkins and Karl Binns of Cool Stream Solutions for sponsoring Rich's shorts for the fight.
Dean Jewell for Rich's charity tattoo.
Nikki from 'What's On' magazine for attending to take photos.
Connor Henning for taking photos on the night.
Mark Price of Polar Bear Windows for donating the hot air balloon ride.
Karen Bartley for donating a free reflexology session.
Kat Cornish for donating free eyebrow tattooing.
And finally to Rich for all of his dedication to make this possible and for putting himself in the ring on the night!
We would like to thank Tina and Rich for all their efforts and EVERYONE who supported them with their event. The amount raised is a phenomenal total for Alopecia UK and we are incredibly grateful.
