Synthetic Wigs

Sandra Plaskow on Synthetic wigs

In 2002 my mother passed away and I began my continuing battle with alopecia. Throughout the last 5 years I have researched extensively on the subject of wigs in order to get the best and most natural looking and comfortable wigs around. My first wig was from Selfridges and was by Revlon, at the time I thought it looked great but now with the advances in fibres, I can see how “wiggy” it looked and today the improvements are enormous, which is lucky for us. I have never worn a human hair wig as I decided early on that as I was out of the habit of styling my own hair I wanted something that was easy to look after. Acrylic wigs have the advantage of wash and go, going back into the original style after washing. Over the years I have experimented with many styles and colours and have become more adventurous because I can! I now choose wigs in modern acrylic fibres that look as natural as my own hair with the advantage that “bad hair days” are a thing of the past (if you know what I mean).

There are many advantages to acrylic wigs and at present I am having a bespoke wig made to my head measurements but with acrylic hair. Here are my plus points

  • They can be trimmed and thinned by hairdressers to give a more natural appearance.
  • They are extremely inexpensive especially online.
  • You can buy off the peg in all styles and colours and you don’t have to wait ages to get them.
  • Because of their cheapness you can afford to change styles regularly. Just one last thing to point out. If you have AT or AU, you do not need to pay VAT on your wig which is quite a saving. All you need to do is to fill in a form at the wig shop, confirming that you’ve got AT/AU, giving your name and address and then signing at the bottom. Good wig shops/salons are aware of this so-called ‘0-rated VAT’, but do check just in case!
  • Today wigs have a natural appearance that can take gel and conditioner.
  • I find changing the style and colour often gives me a great boost each time and I don’t get bored.
  • You can afford 2 or 3 on the go at the same time. I choose different styles and colours but you could choose similar colour styles and lengths.
  • Be brave and have fun with them. If you are confident and look good you will in time be a happy bunny.
  • Remember when you get your acrylic wig you can change the appearance and have it cut further by your stylist to your exact requirements and remember also that it won’t grow out of shape EVER!

We have to live with this so we must make the best of it. At present I have 4 wigs on the go. A mid length red number with flicked ends, a straight blond over dark bob. A curly wig and a blond streaky number. I love them all, so this is my case for acrylic wigs, so go enjoy!
